Weird Hommus

IMG_8249Hommus is a high protein vegan tasy snack without soy, eaten as  spread or party snack (have your own party and snack all day). Most Hommus variations consist of chick peas, tahini, lemon, and garlic. However this hommus is a little… weird. But still yum.

I’m not so crash hot on garlic and I was just short of chick peas, so here’s an improvised version of “hommus” that turned out to be the best I’ve had in a while. Better than the supermarkets’ overly sour varieties anyway.

This snack contains:

  • chickpeas (cooked)
  • tahini (hulled or unhulled)
  • grapefruit (or lemon)
  • salt & water

Instead of lemon I used grapefruit (a short time ago, just before WP started, a friend gave me five massive grapefruit. Or did you think I was addicted?), and because I was short on chick peas I boosted the recipe with some precooked pasta (it’s very handy!). I would recommend going with more chick peas and not the pasta if you’re going to keep it as a spread (for bread), but as a party snack the extra carbs won’t hurt. Using the pasta today is just a tasty example of how creativity can pay off.

The amounts in this recipe make enough hommus for two people to snack on. If you want to use it as a spread and keep it in the fridge, make three or four times as much.

IMG_8242The chick peas that were floating raw in the fridge needed to be boiled for 20 minutes or so, which added some preparation time to this otherwise quick snack.

Directions…

Throw the peas (cool them in water first), along with the cooked pasta (could also use tofu) (or more chick peas), into the blended/processor. The chick peas plus pasta or tofu should make up a cup to a cup and a half. Add three heaped tables spoons of tahini (hulled or unhulled), a few squeezes of grapefruit juice (insteIMG_8245ad of lemon) and half a teaspoon of salt. For a more fluffy mixture add olive oil to taste (a small squirt did it for me).

Have a cup of water standing by and add half of it at first and see what kind of mixture you come up with. If it is too thick, add the rest. Simple, huh?

Finally, RESIST the temptation to lick the hommus off the food processor’s blades. The temptation will arise and you must overcome this moment of uncertainty. Be firm.
